Information Architecture

Letter I

Structure and organization of content and navigation so users find what they need.

Updated:

Working definition

Information architecture (IA) defines how content is organized, labeled, and connected so it is findable and understandable.

Typical deliverables

  • Content inventory and audit.
  • Taxonomy and labeling.
  • Sitemap and navigation diagrams.
  • Card sorting or tree testing when mental models are unclear.

Personal criterion

If users cannot predict where something lives, the issue is IA before visual UI.
