Working definition

Search UX is the experience of searching: the field, suggestions, results, empty states, ranking, and refinement.

Putting a search box on the page is not enough. Search retrieves; Search UX decides whether that retrieval makes sense. It rests on IA (names, types, relationships) and on filters and facets when the set is large.

Criterion

If the query is reasonable and the result is not recognizable, the problem is not that “users don’t know how to search”.
