Critical Thinking
Letter CThe practice of evaluating claims, evidence, and assumptions before accepting them as the basis for a decision. In UX, it separates findings from interpretations and exposes solutions built on convincing but fragile stories.

Working definition
Critical thinking is the practice of examining a claim before using it to make a decision. It asks where the claim comes from, what evidence supports it, which assumptions it contains, and what could show that it is wrong.
It is not reflexive opposition or fault-finding. Its purpose is to improve the quality of reasoning. A useful critique does not stop at “this is wrong”; it states what remains unknown, what risk that uncertainty creates, and how the team could reduce it.
This matters in UX because our information is incomplete. An interview provides accounts, a metric shows aggregate behavior, and a stakeholder contributes business knowledge. None of those sources interprets itself. We have to compare them and acknowledge their limits.
Finding, interpretation, and decision
A practical model separates three layers:
- Finding: what we observed or recorded. Three participants left the flow when asked for information they did not have at hand.
- Interpretation: the explanation we propose. The request interrupts the task and increases uncertainty.
- Decision: the intervention we choose. Let people continue and provide the information later.
A common mistake is presenting an interpretation as if it were a finding, or jumping directly from a data point to a solution. Separating the layers shows where disagreement actually lives: in the observation, the explanation, or the decision criteria.
Questions that improve a decision
- What evidence supports this claim?
- Could the source observe what we are concluding?
- Are we describing a pattern or generalizing a memorable case?
- Which assumption must be true for the solution to work?
- What alternative explanation fits the same data?
- What would we look for if we wanted to prove ourselves wrong?
- Which interests or incentives shape our reading of the problem?
These questions do not need a ceremony. They can sit inside a design critique, research synthesis, brief, or prioritization conversation.
Difference from analytical thinking
Analytical thinking breaks a problem into parts and reveals relationships. Critical thinking evaluates the quality and sufficiency of the material used to build that understanding.
Teams need both. A detailed problem map can still be based on weak data or misleading categories. Conversely, a team can challenge every source rigorously and never produce an actionable structure.
A lightweight practice for UX
- Write the central claim as a testable sentence.
- Separate evidence, interpretation, and assumption.
- Look for at least one alternative explanation.
- Identify the cost of being wrong.
- Choose the smallest check that could change the decision.
- Record what changed and what uncertainty remains.
The check might be a data query, another interview, a usability test, or a review with someone who understands a technical constraint. The method should follow the uncertainty rather than the team’s habitual process.
Anti-patterns
- Using research quotes to decorate a decision that was already made.
- Confusing confidence with evidence.
- Delaying a reversible decision until certainty becomes impossible.
- Pointing out flaws without defining what would help the team learn.
- Hiding criteria and values behind claims of technical neutrality.
Short definition
Critical thinking makes the chain between evidence, interpretation, and decision visible enough to review. In product design, that chain turns strong opinions into examinable hypotheses and lets a team act without pretending to know more than it does.
