Context — Unifying the KIU Experience

With the growth of the KIU product suite and expansion into new markets, the need arose to create a unified design system that would ensure visual and interaction consistency across all products.

The KIUverse Design System was born to solve the challenges of scalability, maintenance, and brand coherence, establishing a common design language that could adapt to the specific needs of the airline industry.

My role as UX Design Lead focused on leading the system's development, from needs research to implementation and documentation of the complete design system.

We need all our products to look and function like a coherent family, but each must maintain its specific identity.

— Product Manager, KIU System Solutions

The Challenge — Experience Fragmentation

Before the design system, each product had its own component implementation, resulting in visual and interaction inconsistencies that affected user experience and development efficiency.

Key Findings

Insights that shaped the design system

Scalability

Scalability Need

The system had to support future growth and addition of new products without compromising consistency.

"The system must grow with us, not limit us."
Aviation adaptation

Aviation Industry Adaptation

Components had to adapt to the specific needs of the airline industry, including specialized terminology and workflows.

"It must feel like an aviation product, not generic."
Accessibility

Accessibility and Usability

The system had to prioritize accessibility and usability for users in critical operational environments.

"Errors in aviation can be fatal."

Solution Strategy

The solution was based on Material Design 3 as a foundation, adapting it to the specific needs of the airline industry and creating a design token system that allowed flexibility and consistency.
